Volcanic Eruption Disrupts Flights at Ngurah Rai Airport
Denpasar, 07 July 2925 — I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport has announced that the eruption of Mount Lewotvi Rakiraki in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, has led to the cancellation of multiple flights on Monday, disrupting both domestic and international air traffic.
“Based on data received as of Monday afternoon, several airlines operating routes to and from Labuan Bajo, Australia, Singapore, and South Korea have reported flight cancellations and delays,” said airport spokesperson Schach.
A total of two flights — covering both international and domestic routes — were confirmed cancelled. Virgin Australia, which operates flights to Melbourne, Gold Coast, and Sydney, canceled six scheduled services. Jetstar Airways also cancelled 16 flights on its routes to Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns, Perth, Adelaide, Sydney, and Singapore. Meanwhile, AirAsia Indonesia cancelled two flights to Labuan Bajo.
“Several delayed flights include those from Qantas flying to Sydney and Melbourne, as well as Air Busan to Busan,” Schach added.
The eruption occurred at approximately 11:05 AM local time on Monday, with Mount Lewotvi Rakiraki spewing volcanic ash up to 18,000 meters into the atmosphere.
In response, airport authorities at Ngurah Rai have coordinated with relevant agencies to monitor the situation closely. As of Monday afternoon, the movement of volcanic ash had not yet impacted Bali’s airspace, allowing limited flight operations to continue under monitoring.
However, Schach noted that Bali’s inbound and outbound traffic had been affected indirectly by the volcanic activity, particularly for flights transiting through affected areas.
To assist impacted travelers, airlines have begun extending support to passengers affected by delays and cancellations. Some carriers have reorganized their schedules or contacted passengers directly via email.
“To assist passengers already at the airport, we have set up help desks on the second floor of both the international and domestic terminals,” Schach explained.
Additionally, El Tari Airport in Kupang reported the cancellation of four flights between Kupang and Flores as a precautionary measure. Nam Air and Wings Air suspended services between El Tari Airport and Frans Seda Airport in Maumere, as well as between Kupang and Larantuka, East Flores.
