KM Tunu Pratama Jaya Sinking: Indonesia SAR Teams Battle Stormy Seas to Find Missing Passengers

The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation’s Directorate General of Sea Transportation has set up a Unified Command Post at the ASDP Gilimanuk Branch Office to coordinate the evacuation of the passenger motorboat KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya, which sank in the Bali Strait.

The vessel was en route from Ketapang Port to Gilimanuk Port when it sank on Wednesday night at 23:35 WIB. The incident occurred near coordinates 8°9'32.35"S 114°25'6.38"E.

Muhammad Masyhud, Director General of Sea Transportation, expressed deep concern over the incident in an official statement on Thursday, July 3, 2025. He emphasized that all necessary measures would be taken swiftly and collaboratively, prioritizing human safety.

Preliminary manifest data indicated that the KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya was carrying 53 passengers, 12 crew members, and 22 vehicles. As of 10:00 local time, four fatalities had been confirmed, while 31 passengers were rescued unharmed. “We are still verifying the identities of the victims,” Masyhud stated.

Search and rescue (SAR) operations, which began early Thursday, are ongoing. However, evacuation efforts face challenges due to rough seas, with waves reaching 2.5 meters, strong winds, and powerful currents in the area.

“We are coordinating closely with all relevant agencies to ensure an effective SAR operation,” Masyhud added.
