Esther Gonzalez Scores 4th Goal in Euro 2025 as Spain Beat Italy 3–1

Madrid, [11 July] — Esther Gonzalez scored her fourth goal of the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 tournament, securing Spain’s hard-fought 3–1 victory over Italy. The win maintains Spain’s perfect record atop Group B, while Italy clinched second place and a quarter-final berth after Portugal fell to already-eliminated Belgium.

Italy started aggressively, with captain Elena Linari rattling the crossbar with a powerful header early on. The breakthrough came when Elisabetta Oliviero fired a fierce left-footed strike past Spanish goalkeeper Adriana Nanclares. Spain responded swiftly: Athenea del Castillo sliced through Italy’s defense, teeing up Alexia Putellas, whose clever backheel set up Del Castillo for a thunderous equalizer.

Italy squandered chances to reclaim the lead before halftime. Martina Piemonte blazed a close-range effort wide, and Barbara Bonansea miscontrolled a headed opportunity.

Spain dominated the second half, with Patri Guijarro restoring their lead just four minutes in — pouncing on a loose ball at the edge of the box and drilling it into the bottom corner. Nanclares preserved the advantage with a superb save against Sofia Cantore’s deflected shot. Gonzalez sealed the win in stoppage time, tapping in Putellas’ delivery from point-blank range.
