Purbaya Says Official Reshuffle May Have Contributed to His Dismissal

Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa admitted that his decision to reshuffle officials within the Ministry of Finance was one of the reasons that may have led to his removal as finance minister. The decision came amid reports of internal conflicts within the ministry, which eventually contributed to his dismissal.

Purbaya made the statement following the official handover ceremony for the new Finance Minister, Suahasil Nazara, at the Ministry of Finance in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.

“Some of it was because of the decision to reshuffle ministry officials, yes, partly,” Purbaya said.

He added, however, that cabinet reshuffles were ultimately at the discretion of President Prabowo Subianto. Purbaya said he was not aware of any other reasons for his replacement.

Purbaya also said that the policies he implemented during his tenure had followed the plans set by the president.

“There were no other policies that led to my dismissal because all of our policies followed the president’s policies,” he said.

On Thursday, September 10, 2026, Purbaya reshuffled approximately 400 senior officials within the Ministry of Finance. The changes affected positions across various directorates general and public service agencies under the ministry.

Purbaya said that official orders regarding the reshuffle had already been issued, but the new finance minister might still have the authority to make changes to them.

Four days after the reshuffle, on Monday afternoon, September 14, President Prabowo Subianto suddenly dismissed Purbaya from his position as finance minister. Earlier that day, Purbaya had attended a meeting with Commission IV of the Regional Representative Council (DPD) in Senayan, Jakarta.

Prabowo appointed Suahasil Nazara, who was serving as deputy finance minister at the time, to replace Purbaya.

Purbaya became finance minister on September 8, 2025, succeeding Sri Mulyani Indrawati. He was dismissed just a few days before completing his first year in office.
