Moon, Jupiter, and Lyrids Meteor Shower Create Stunning Sky Show This Week

As the light from the Lyrids meteor shower fades, the night sky continues to offer a calm and beautiful display. On Wednesday, April 22, Jupiter will appear close to the Moon, forming a striking alignment in the sky. This pairing will be visible around 45 minutes after sunset, standing out as the evening sky darkens.

Under clear skies, a serene celestial scene will unfold. A thin, waxing crescent Moon will appear just above the bright planet Jupiter, creating an elegant and eye-catching view. No special equipment is needed, as both objects will be bright enough to be seen with the naked eye.

According to Forbes and Space.com, the Moon will be about 38 percent illuminated as it approaches its first quarter phase, positioned roughly three degrees above Jupiter.

The celestial display does not end there. The alignment will also feature the Gemini twins, Pollux and Castor, shining with distinct colors above the scene. Located a few degrees above Jupiter and the Moon, their presence adds depth and balance, transforming the alignment into a breathtaking sight for stargazers worldwide.

As April comes to an end, the night sky offers one final highlight. The Lyrids meteor shower will peak on April 22 and 23, providing a rewarding display for those watching under clear, dark skies. At its peak, viewers may see around 10 to 15 meteors per hour.

For the best viewing experience, look toward the eastern sky starting at around 10 p.m. As the night deepens, the radiant in the constellation Lyra will rise higher, increasing the chances of spotting meteors before dawn.
