Indonesia Claims Men’s Badminton Team Gold After 3–2 Victory Over China
Indonesia won its first gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games after its men’s badminton team defeated China 3–2 at the Ichinomiya City Sports Gymnasium on Thursday, September 24, 2026.
Moh. Zaki Ubadillah was the decisive player for Indonesia. Ubed, the well-known young star, played in the final match when the score was tied at 2–2. He sealed Indonesia’s victory by defeating Weng Hongyang 23–21, 21–13.
Indonesia fell 0–2 behind earlier in the tie. Men’s singles player Jonatan Christie lost to Shi Yu Qi 13–21, 18–21. Then, the pair of Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri lost to Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang in a close three-game match, 20–22, 21–19, 14–21.
Alwi Farhan’s victory over Li Shi Feng, 23–21, 15–21, 21–16, helped the Indonesian men’s badminton team regain confidence. The momentum continued as Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin defeated He Ji Ting and Liu Yi 23–21, 21–10.
Leo said that in the first game, when they were trailing 17–20, he and Marthin tried to play as if they had nothing to lose, and the approach worked well. They were able to turn the match around.
“In the second game, we kept communicating better,” Leo said, according to a press release from the PBSI media team on Thursday, September 24, 2026.
Marthin and Leo were determined to share their ideas and communicate effectively during the Asian Games final.
“We talked a lot and stayed more relaxed during the game. I think now is the right time. When else would we have the chance to do it? So, we didn’t want to miss the opportunity,” he said.
Their experience at the 2022 Asian Games also motivated the pair to perform better this time.
“We played against Korea then and didn’t get a good result, so we didn’t want to make the same mistake. That motivated us to win the match,” he said.
The men’s team victory was even more significant because it marked Indonesia’s first gold medal in this event in 28 years. The Indonesian team last won the men’s team event in 1998.
