Holiday Travel Boom Hits Yogyakarta Airports Ahead of Eid
Two airports in Yogyakarta, Indonesia — Adisutjipto Airport and Yogyakarta International Airport — are experiencing a surge in passenger traffic as people prepare for the 2026 Eid al-Fitr holiday.
The General Manager of Adisutjipto Airport, Wibowo Cahyono Soekadi, stated that the airport anticipates a 518 percent increase in passengers during this year’s Eid holiday season. “This represents an additional 11,701 passengers compared to last year’s Eid travel period,” Wibowo said on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.
He also noted that aircraft movements are expected to rise by 213.89 percent, reaching approximately 226 movements, compared to just 72 flights recorded in 2025. “To accommodate this increase, we have added 43 additional flights, consisting of 24 arrivals and 19 departures,” he said.
According to the Eid holiday transportation calendar, the outbound travel peak is expected to occur on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, while the return flow is projected to peak on Saturday, March 28, 2026.
Airport authorities have set up monitoring posts to oversee flight operations, passenger movement, and security services in real time. These posts have been operational since March 13 and will continue until March 30. The command post also serves as an information center for passengers, providing updates on flight schedules, handling complaints, and offering on-site assistance.
Meanwhile, Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) has recorded an average of 15,000 passengers per day over the past three days. The airport’s General Manager, Ruly Artha, reported that on Saturday, March 14, 2026, the airport handled 15,644 passengers across 100 flights.
On Sunday, March 15, 2026, the number rose to 16,407 passengers with 102 flights. “Compared to the 2025 holiday period, this marks a 26 percent increase in passenger traffic and a 9 percent rise in aircraft movements,” Ruly said.
On Monday, March 16, 2026, the airport recorded approximately 15,031 passengers, with 8,961 arrivals and 6,070 departures, indicating that inbound traffic to Yogyakarta remains higher than outbound traffic.
