Electricity Restored Across Aceh Weeks After Devastating Floods

State electricity company PLN has announced that all power substations in Aceh are fully operational again after being disrupted by flash floods and landslides in late November 2025.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said the achievement marks a significant milestone in restoring the province’s electricity system.

“During my visit to the PLN office in Aceh Tamiang, I confirmed that all substations are now operating normally. Both the main transmission lines and power generation facilities have been restored,” Darmawan said.

He noted that two critical transmission lines damaged by the disaster — the Arun–Bireuen line and the Pangkalan Brandan–Langsa line — have been successfully repaired. PLN has also completed the construction of a second transmission line to strengthen and improve the reliability of Aceh’s power network.

“The completion of the second transmission line last night has significantly improved the stability of the electricity system in Aceh,” he said, as quoted by Antara on January 2, 2026.

Since the disaster, PLN has been gradually restoring electricity to affected villages. Of approximately 6,500 villages across Aceh, around 180 remain without power due to damaged infrastructure and difficult access.

“Access roads are being reopened, electricity poles are being reinstalled, and transmission lines are under repair. The number of villages without electricity continues to decrease each day,” Darmawan explained.

In addition to restoring power, PLN employees have also provided humanitarian assistance in affected areas. Darmawan said workers volunteered to repair electrical systems and help clean public facilities.

“We restored electrical systems at 15 mosques and helped clean them so they can be used again by local communities,” he said.

Darmawan also expressed his appreciation to President Prabowo Subianto for instructing PLN to deploy teams directly to disaster-hit areas to accelerate recovery efforts.

Previously, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said the government had distributed 1,000 generators and 3,000 cooking stoves to disaster-affected communities across Sumatra. The equipment was delivered using Hercules aircraft.

According to data from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), as of December 21, 2025, floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra had claimed 1,090 lives, left 186 people missing, and affected millions across 52 districts and cities.
