Colombia Advance to World Cup Knockout Stage After 1–0 Victory Over Congo.

Daniel Muñoz played a crucial role in helping Colombia break through Congo’s resilient defense and secure a place in the World Cup knockout stage with a 1–0 victory on Tuesday night.

Muñoz scored the decisive goal in the 76th minute after Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi had frustrated Colombia with a series of outstanding saves, particularly during the opening 20 minutes.

Mpasi was unable to stop Muñoz’s left-footed effort from inside the penalty area after the ball deflected off one of his defenders. The goal was Muñoz’s second of the tournament, and the Crystal Palace defender was named Man of the Match.

“We played with energy and determination and stayed committed to our game plan,” Muñoz said. “As a team, we earned these three points for ourselves and for all the fans who supported us. This victory gives us confidence, but we’re aiming for more.”

Congo nearly equalized in stoppage time, but Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas produced a superb save to deny Nathanael Mbuku’s long-range effort before stopping a header from Chancel Mbemba from the ensuing corner.

“We probably should have scored more goals, but Congo made things difficult, and it was tense until the final whistle,” Colombia coach Néstor Lorenzo said. “Still, I believe we deserved to win.”

Luis Díaz had two goals ruled out in quick succession late in the match — one for a foul in the 79th minute and another for offside a minute later.

Congo began its first World Cup appearance in 52 years with a surprising 1–1 draw against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal.

Colombia now tops Group K with six points from two matches, two points ahead of Portugal and five clear of Congo. Portugal earlier defeated Uzbekistan 5–0 in Houston, with Ronaldo scoring twice.

A draw against Portugal on Saturday would be enough for Colombia to secure first place in the group, while also guaranteeing Portugal’s progression to the knockout stage.

After missing the 2022 World Cup, Colombia entered the tournament ranked 11th in the world and as South America’s third-highest-ranked team behind Brazil and Argentina. Los Cafeteros opened their campaign with a 3–1 victory over Uzbekistan. Congo, ranked 47th, faced disruptions in its preparations due to an Ebola outbreak.

Many Congolese supporters were unable to attend the tournament because of travel restrictions linked to the outbreak.

Among those in attendance was Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, a fan known for reenacting a statue of Patrice Lumumba, Congo’s assassinated independence leader, during the Africa Cup of Nations. After missing the team’s opening match while in quarantine, he attended the game in Guadalajara and maintained his statue-like pose throughout.

Colombia dominated the early stages, creating numerous scoring opportunities that were repeatedly denied by Mpasi.

The goalkeeper produced saves from long-range efforts by James Rodríguez, Johan Mojica, and Gustavo Puerta, while also stopping close-range attempts from Díaz and Muñoz. He made another key save to deny Díaz in the 50th minute.

“Our goalkeeper was outstanding today, although I’m not surprised because he has consistently delivered for us,” Congo coach Sébastien Desabre said. “Overall, we struggled defensively, but there were some positive moments at the back apart from the goal we conceded. Colombia was the better team, although we had a chance to equalize at the end. Now we must focus on the crucial match ahead.”

The Colombian midfield also showed greater fluidity after Juan Quintero came off the bench for James Rodríguez, who joined Colombian greats Freddy Rincón and Carlos Valderrama with 10 World Cup appearances.
