Southern Philippines Hit by 6.6-Magnitude Offshore Earthquake

A powerful earthquake struck Mindanao in the southern Philippines on Friday evening, June 26, 2026. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.6 and occurred at 7:34 p.m. local time.

The strongest shaking was recorded at Intensity V on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale in Kiamba, Sarangani. At this intensity, the shaking is strong enough to cause objects inside buildings to move or fall.

The earthquake occurred offshore and did not trigger a tsunami warning. Earlier this month, a magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck Mindanao on June 8, killing 81 people and injuring more than 1,000 others. That earlier earthquake also generated a small tsunami that reached parts of Indonesia.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the latest earthquake at a magnitude of 6.8. The tremor was felt in the Talaud Islands, North Sulawesi, at Intensity III on the MMI scale, where it was noticeable indoors and comparable to the vibration caused by a passing truck.

According to PHIVOLCS, the earthquake’s epicenter was located about 90 kilometers southwest of Balut Island, off the coast of Sarangani in Davao Occidental. Meanwhile, BMKG placed the epicenter approximately 196 kilometers northwest of Tahuna in the Sangihe Islands.
