Nationwide Labor Protests Planned for August 28 Across Major Indonesian Cities

Thousands of workers and union members are set to hold a mass protest on Thursday, August 28, 2025. According to Said Iqbal, President of the Indonesian Trade Union Confederation, the main rally will be held in front of the House of Representatives (DPR) building in Senayan, Jakarta.

In an announcement made on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, Iqbal stated that at least 10,000 workers from industrial areas in Karawang, Bekasi, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Jakarta are expected to converge on the capital.

The protest will not be limited to the DPR building. The social media group Bareng Warga also reported that demonstrations are planned at the Jakarta City Hall and in front of the Horse Statue in Central Jakarta.

Iqbal emphasized that the August 28 protests are a nationwide movement. Simultaneous actions are planned in several other provinces, particularly those with major industrial zones, including:

  1. Serang, Banten

  2. Bandung, West Java

  3. Semarang, Central Java

  4. Surabaya, East Java

  5. Medan, North Sumatra

  6. Banda Aceh, Aceh

  7. Batam, Riau Islands

  8. Bandar Lampung, Lampung

  9. Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan

  10. Pontianak, West Kalimantan

  11. Samarinda, East Kalimantan

  12. Makassar, South Sulawesi

  13. Gorontalo

The labor groups have put forward a list of demands for the protest. Their key issues include:

  • A demand for the government to increase the 2026 minimum wage by 8.5% to 10%.

  • An end to layoffs and the abolition of the outsourcing system.

  • Comprehensive tax reforms, which they argue currently burden workers and the general public.

  • The immediate passage of the new labor law draft, which was approved by the Constitutional Court in Ruling Number 168 of 2024.

  • The passage of the Asset Seizure Bill and revisions to the Election Law.
