Affan Kurniawan’s Death Sparks Nationwide Unrest
The death of 21-year-old Affan Kurniawan, an online motorbike taxi driver, during a protest on August 28, 2025, has ignited nationwide outrage. Struck by a police tactical vehicle while demanding the dissolution of the House of Representatives (DPR), Affan’s tragic end has become a symbol of public frustration.
What began as a political protest has grown into a broader movement, especially among informal workers and the economically vulnerable. The focus has shifted from politicians to the police, particularly the Jakarta Mobile Brigade, seen as symbols of unchecked state power. Even President Prabowo Subianto’s public condolences and promises of justice have done little to calm public anger.
Though the demand to disband the DPR is unconstitutional, it reflects deep disillusionment with political institutions that no longer serve the people. Affan’s death exposed more than just bad governance — it highlighted systemic issues: police brutality, selective law enforcement, and policies that harm rather than help ordinary citizens.
Instead of reforming state institutions, Prabowo has expanded the military’s influence to counterbalance police power, creating a dangerous rivalry. On the ground, both institutions increasingly serve the interests of the elite, often using force against those demanding justice.
Recent protests in Pati, Central Java — sparked by arbitrary tax hikes — were met with silence, as Regent Sudewo remains in office, protected by central authorities. Meanwhile, job losses, budget cuts, and rising living costs are pushing people to the edge.
While the president travels abroad and his aides appear detached, public anger is growing. Prabowo’s speeches paint a rosy future, but many see them as out of touch with reality.
If this disconnect continues, the risk of violent unrest — perhaps worse than May 1998 — looms large. The government must act now: listen to the people, reform the system, and show genuine care before it’s too late.
