Jakarta Gears Up for Eid al-Adha with 69,000 Animals and Presidential Presence
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has projected that approximately 69,000 animals will be sacrificed in the capital for this year’s Eid al-Adha celebration. “We estimate that around 69,000 sacrificial animals will be slaughtered in Jakarta,” Pramono stated on Thursday, June 5, 2025, during an inspection at a cattle barn owned by the Regional Public Company (Perumda) Dharma Jaya in Cakung, East Jakarta.
To support the upcoming Eid celebration, which falls on Friday, June 6, 2025, the Jakarta Provincial Government has deployed 300 halal-certified slaughterers. These professionals will be stationed at designated slaughter sites across Jakarta. In addition, the government has prepared 90 veterinarians to assess the health of the sacrificial cows and goats. “We hope the Eid al-Adha celebration tomorrow will proceed smoothly,” Pramono added.
This year marks Governor Pramono Anung’s first Eid al-Adha in office, having been inaugurated as Jakarta’s governor on February 20, 2025. Pramono, a politician from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) and former Cabinet Secretary, noted that he would perform the Eid prayer in Jakarta, though he had yet to decide between Istiqlal Mosque and Fatahillah Mosque located at Jakarta City Hall.
President Prabowo Subianto is also set to lead the Eid al-Adha prayer in Jakarta this year. Last year, before his inauguration as president, Prabowo held the Eid prayer at his private residence in Hambalang, Bogor, West Java. According to Mulawarman Hannase, Acting Grand Imam of Istiqlal Mosque, President Prabowo will attend the Eid prayer at Istiqlal Mosque, accompanied by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka.
After the prayer, the President and Vice President are expected to hand over their sacrificial animals to the mosque’s committee. The slaughtering of the President’s and other worshippers’ sacrificial animals will take place the following day, on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at Istiqlal Mosque.
This year’s Eid celebration will feature a unique event, according to Mulawarman. The President’s sacrificial cow will be prepared and served in a communal meal with orphans. The mosque’s committee plans to invite 2,000 orphans from the Greater Jakarta area for the meal, which will take place at Istiqlal Mosque on Sunday, June 8. However, it remains uncertain whether President Prabowo himself will join the meal.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs has officially declared that Eid al-Adha, marking 10 Dzulhijjah 1446 Hijri, will fall on Friday, June 6, 2025. The announcement was made following a closed isbat (confirmation) meeting on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at the Ministry’s Auditorium H.M. Rasjidi in Central Jakarta. The ministry had earlier determined that 1 Dzulhijjah would begin on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
