Indonesia Hits Gold Target at Asian Para Games

Indonesia reached its target of seven gold medals at the 2026 Asian Para Games on Wednesday after Handayani and Gischa Zayana each won gold in the women’s boccia finals.

The two athletes delivered strong performances at Nagoya City General Gymnasium in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, helping Indonesia improve its medal tally at the fifth edition of Asia’s largest multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities.

Handayani claimed gold after defeating Malaysia’s Angeline Melissa. Trailing 1–4 after the first three ends, the 30-year-old staged a comeback by scoring four points in the fourth and final end to secure victory.

Meanwhile, Gischa won gold after a closely contested match against Hiu Lam Yeung of Hong Kong, China.

After taking the lead in the first end, Gischa and her opponent exchanged points over the next two ends before drawing in the fourth and final end. Gischa ultimately secured a 6–5 victory.

The two boccia gold medals brought Indonesia’s total to seven, allowing the team to meet the target set by the Indonesian National Paralympic Committee.

The other five gold medals came from several events. Swimmer Maulana Rifky Yavlanda won gold in the men’s S12 100-meter freestyle and 100-meter backstroke events.

Kadek Dwi Purna Yasa claimed gold in the men’s F57 discus throw, while Karisma Evi Tiarani won the women’s T63 100-meter race. Para-cyclist Muhammad Fadli Imammuddin added another gold medal in the men’s C4 4,000-meter individual pursuit.

Indonesia still has opportunities to add to its gold medal tally, with several of its top athletes scheduled to compete in finals in the coming days.
