Thousands Gather at Al-Aqsa Mosque for Eid al-Adha Prayers
Thousands of Palestinian Muslims gathered at the courtyards of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem on Wednesday to mark the beginning of Eid al-Adha celebrations for the year 1447 Hijri.
Eid al-Adha is observed by Muslims worldwide to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son, Prophet Ishmael, in obedience to God’s command.
As part of the celebration, Muslims perform the Qurbani ritual by slaughtering livestock and distributing the meat to people in need and underprivileged communities.
This year’s Eid al-Adha celebrations come as Palestinians continue to endure the impact of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Residents in the enclave are still facing Israeli military attacks despite a ceasefire agreement announced in October 2025.
According to Gaza health authorities, more than 880 people have been killed and 2,645 others injured in continuing Israeli attacks since the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas was reached on October 10, 2025.
The initial agreement was expected to permanently halt the prolonged conflict in Gaza. However, the war has reportedly claimed the lives of more than 72,000 people, most of them women and children, while over 172,000 others have been injured.
Since October 2023, Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip have also reportedly destroyed around 90 percent of civilian infrastructure across the besieged territory.
