Philippines’ Mayon Volcano Spews Ash 3 Kilometers High

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported on Friday, October 30, 2026, that Mount Mayon experienced a moderately explosive eruption shortly before noon, sending an ash column approximately 3 kilometers above its summit. The eruption lasted nearly six minutes, according to the agency.

The ash column drifted southwest, according to ABS-CBN, gradually moving toward nearby residential areas. Following the eruption, PHIVOLCS raised Mount Mayon’s alert level to Level 3 on a five-level scale. This means residents living within a 6-kilometer radius of the volcano are required to evacuate due to the risks of pyroclastic flows, lava flows, rockfalls, and other volcanic hazards.

All human activities are prohibited within the 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ). These restrictions include mountain climbing, orchid picking, vegetable harvesting, and other similar activities. All-terrain vehicle (ATV) rides are permitted only within the Cagsawa Ruins area. According to The Manila Times, Albay Governor Noel Rosal announced a temporary suspension of operations in all remaining restricted areas.

The governor also suspended classes at all levels in both public and private schools across the province. In addition, a no-fly zone was imposed over Mount Mayon, while access to the Mayon Skyline entrance was temporarily restricted pending further notice.

Authorities have advised residents to take precautions in the event of ashfall. People are encouraged to cover their noses and mouths with masks or damp cloths to minimize exposure to volcanic ash.

Known for its nearly perfect conical shape, Mount Mayon is one of the Philippines’ most prominent tourist attractions. However, it is also the country’s most active volcano and is considered one of its most hazardous.
