Veteran actor Lee Soon-jae passed away on Tuesday at the age of 91, according to his family.
Lee was one of South Korea’s most renowned and respected actors, having appeared in around 140 major television dramas, as well as numerous films and stage productions over more than six decades.
Born in 1934 in Hoeryong, now part of North Korea, Lee moved with his family to Seoul before the outbreak of the Korean War (1950–1953). He began his acting career while studying at Seoul National University, making his debut in 1956 with the play “Beyond the Horizon.”
One of his most memorable roles was in the popular family drama “What Is Love?” (1991–92), which achieved a 65 percent viewership rating and helped cement his image as a serious, traditional father figure.
He also starred in several major historical dramas, including his role as the principled doctor Yoo Ui-tae in “Hur Jun” (1999), and appeared in “Sangdo” (2001) and “Lee San” (2007).
In his 70s, Lee expanded into comedy through sitcoms such as “High Kick!” (2006) and “High Kick Through the Roof” (2009), gaining a new generation of fans with his humorous performances. He also participated in the travel reality show “Grandpas Over Flowers.”
Lee continued acting well into his 80s, remaining active until late last year. He was also the oldest person ever to receive an award at the KBS Drama Awards.
In addition to his acting career, Lee briefly served as a lawmaker in 1992, representing the then-ruling Democratic Liberal Party.
